Prompt Is Too Long in Claude? Which of 4 Causes Is Yours

You paste something into Claude, hit send, and nothing happens. Instead of an answer you get a line telling you the prompt is too long. The message you spent ten minutes assembling never even reached the model.

The wording makes it sound like one thing, but there are four different situations that produce it, and the fix for each one is different. Two of them are about the message you just sent. The other two are about everything that came before it.

We build Unibase Memory, a Chrome extension that syncs AI chats across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Kimi and DeepSeek into one searchable memory and sends the right piece back into whichever assistant you are in, in one click. Which means we spend a lot of time watching where context runs out, and this particular message is one of the most common places it does.

What the message actually means

Claude reads your entire conversation from the beginning on every single turn. Your messages, its replies, your system prompt, your attachments, and anything sitting in a project knowledge base. All of it has to fit inside one budget, and that budget is measured in tokens rather than characters.

When the thing you are about to send would push the total past that budget, Claude stops before generating anything. That is why you get no partial answer. It is a refusal at the door, not a truncation.

The useful consequence: the fix is always to make something smaller, and the only question is what.

Cause 1: one message is too big on its own

What it looks like: you pasted a long document, a full transcript, or a large chunk of code, and the very first message in a brand new chat is rejected.

This one is easy to identify because the conversation has no history to blame. If a fresh chat rejects your first message, the message itself is the problem.

The fix: split it. Send the first half, let Claude confirm it has read it, then send the second half. For anything you will reuse, put it in a project knowledge base instead of pasting it every time.

A caveat worth knowing: splitting works for reading, not for reasoning. If Claude needs to compare page 2 against page 90, it needs both in the window at the same time, and splitting does not give you that.

Cause 2: the thread is long and the message tips it over

What it looks like: the chat worked fine for an hour, then a perfectly normal message gets rejected.

Nothing changed about your message. The thread grew, and the room left for new input shrank until an ordinary paragraph no longer fit.

The fix, and this is the part people skip: before you leave the old thread, ask Claude for a handoff. Not a summary, which will read like a book report, but the four things that actually carry forward.

The goal in one or two sentences. The decisions you made and why, which is the part that is hardest to reconstruct. The constraints you gave it. Where the work stands right now.

Copy that out of Claude before you start the new chat, because once you are in the new chat the old one is a different tab and you will not want to go back and forth. Paste it as the first message of the new conversation, then before asking for any work, have Claude restate what it understands the goal and constraints to be. That is where you will catch what got compressed away, usually a constraint.

This is the same mechanic as Claude loses context in a long thread, just with a hard stop instead of a slow drift.

Cause 3: attachments and project knowledge are eating the room

What it looks like: you are inside a project, the chat is short, and your message is short, and it still gets rejected.

Project knowledge counts against the same budget as the conversation. So do files you uploaded earlier in the thread. A project with a large knowledge base starts every conversation partly full.

The fix: open the project knowledge and take out what this particular piece of work does not need. People add reference material once and never remove it, and six months later the project starts every chat with 40% of its room already spent.

For files inside a thread, the same applies. An attachment you needed twenty messages ago is still being re-read on every turn.

Cause 4: you are on a model with a smaller window than you think

What it looks like: the same prompt worked yesterday and does not work today, and nothing about your setup changed.

Claude has more than one model, and they do not all have the same context window. Switching models mid-conversation, or having a different default than you expect, changes the budget under you. Free and paid plans also do not get the same limits.

The fix: check which model the conversation is actually using before you assume the prompt is at fault. If you switched to a faster or cheaper model for speed, that is the tradeoff you took.

Which one is yours

If a brand new chat rejects your first message, it is Cause 1 and you need to split the input.

If a long thread suddenly rejects a normal message, it is Cause 2 and you need a handoff into a new chat.

If a short message in a short chat inside a project gets rejected, it is Cause 3 and you need to clean out the project knowledge.

If the same thing worked yesterday, check the model first. That is Cause 4.

If none of those describe your situation, the message is probably longer than it looks. Pasted content often carries invisible formatting, and a table copied out of a spreadsheet can be several times the size of what you see on screen.

Where a memory layer fits

Be skeptical past this line, because this is the part where we describe our own product.

None of the four causes above are solved by an extension. No browser extension makes Claude's context window bigger, and anything claiming otherwise is describing something else.

What actually happens with the handoff in Cause 2 is that you write it, you save it somewhere, and on the days you are busy you forget to, which are the same days the decisions get made. Then three weeks later you need the reasoning behind a constraint and it is in a thread you cannot search by content.

Unibase Memory is a Chrome extension that keeps a copy of your conversations in your own browser, across Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, Kimi and DeepSeek. It searches inside the conversations rather than across their titles, and it sends selected messages into the chat you are currently in, which you then edit before submitting.

For this problem specifically the useful part is selection. Pushing a whole old thread into a new chat is usually worse than pushing four messages, because a long transcript mixes settled decisions with abandoned attempts and the model has to guess which still apply.

Everything stays in your browser. Sync is optional, and anything you sync is encrypted on your device first using Fernet, which is AES-128-CBC with HMAC-SHA256. Two things it does not do. It does not change Claude's context window, and it does not decide what matters on your behalf.

If your work moves between assistants as well as between threads, transferring AI memory between assistants is the wider version of the same problem, and it is the one no platform has a reason to solve. Unibase Memory sits outside all of them, which is the only position from which that is possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Why does Claude say my prompt is too long when the message is short?
Because the message is not what fills the budget. Claude re-reads the whole conversation, plus any attachments and project knowledge, on every turn. A short message can be the one that tips an already full thread over the line. Check the length of the thread and the size of your project knowledge before you look at the message.
Q2: Does deleting old messages in the thread fix it?
Not reliably. Claude reads the conversation as it stands, so removing material does free room, but you also lose the reasoning you removed. Starting a new chat with a handoff you wrote and checked is usually better than pruning a thread you still need. Unibase Memory keeps its own copy outside Claude, so trimming a thread stops meaning you lose what was in it.
Q3: What is the difference between this and the conversation being too long?
They are the same underlying limit showing up at two different moments. Being told the prompt is too long is a refusal before generating. The other version is a thread that has already reached its ceiling. The equivalent on the ChatGPT side is when a ChatGPT conversation gets too long, and the handoff routine is the same in both. Unibase Memory treats them the same way too, by holding the old thread outside the assistant so the handoff becomes something you find rather than something you have to write on the spot.
Q4: Why do I always lose context when switching between different AI tools?
Because each assistant only knows its own history. Nothing you told Claude is visible to ChatGPT, and no platform has a reason to build that bridge, since keeping your history inside their product is the point. A memory layer that sits outside all of them is the only thing that carries context across, which is what Unibase Memory is for.
Q5: Will a bigger context window make this go away?
It pushes the problem back rather than removing it. Any window fills eventually, and a longer one mostly means you notice later and with more work at stake. It also does not help with the second half of the problem, which is that the thread you need three weeks from now has to be findable, not just long. That second half is the part Unibase Memory exists for, and no window size changes it.
