An example of domain name service for e-mail purposes would be, Milton Calnek & Leigh Calnek have decided to change their email addresses to "milton@calnek.com" and "leigh@calnek.com" respectively.
Another example is that there are two local (software) developers that are using UNIBASE's domain name service. They have thier own domains and full time servers (their own computer that is connected to the 'net 24 hrs/day). UNIBASE provides them a link (a permanent phone connection) and they have their own domains. Please note: you don't need a permanent connection to run your own web service. See more on Virtual Hosting.
One obvious benefit is that your URL will really be your URL. I mean you won't need to look like a subset of the UNIBASE Web site. IMNSHO this is much much nicer for your advertising purposes. If you remember the address of the Molson Canadian site then you understand why you need your own domain.
The other benefit is that your URL is no longer dependent on your Internet Provider. That is if you have you own domain and you decide to switch carriers you don't have to change your letterhead, business cards, brochures, etc to reflect your new place on the 'net. This saves you from having to contact your regular clientele to inform them of your new web address because your address hasn't changed. It will never change because it is your permanent address.
Virtual hosting allowed Ken Holliday to go from "http://www.unibase.com/~hollid/" to "http://www.holliday.com/". Similarly Web Wizards went from "http://www.unibase.com/~wizard/" to "http://webwiz.sask.com/".
UNIBASE started offering this service in late December 1995 and by the end of March 1996 we had over 20 users making use of this service.
